Makoto Shinkai’s Suzume Movie Sets Early Preview Screenings in India and Achieves Box Office Success in Japan
Makoto Shinkai’s highly anticipated movie “Suzume” (Suzume no Tojimari) is set to have early preview screenings in several cities in India, according to an announcement made by PVR Pictures on its official Instagram account on Wednesday. The screenings will be held in Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Gurgaon, Noida, and Bangalore, two weeks ahead of the movie’s formal release in India on April 21. The screenings will take place on April 9 at select PVR Cinemas locations, and attendees will have the opportunity to receive personally signed posters by Makoto Shinkai himself.

“Suzume” has already seen massive success in Japan, where it debuted at the top of the charts and sold 1.33 million seats, grossing 1.88 billion yen (approximately US$13.49 million) in its first three days. This marks a 47.4% increase in revenue and a 38.7% increase in ticket sales compared to Shinkai’s critically acclaimed film “Your Name,” which made 1,277,960,000 yen ($12.51 million at the time) in its first three days. “Suzume” has had the best opening three days of any of Shinkai’s films, with ticket sales up 14.8% and revenue up 14.4% compared to his previous film, “Weathering With You.”

This makes “Suzume” the eighth-highest-earning anime movie in Japan and the 14th highest-grossing movie overall in terms of box office revenue, just below Hayao Miyazaki’s “Ponyo,” which has a budget of 15.50 billion yen (roughly $118 million).
